When many people think of primitive wood craft they think of working with old barn siding and unfinished, or primitive, wood. The barn siding thought may be one aspect but basically primitive wood craft simply means made by hand.

There are many reasons for people choosing the medium of primitive wood craft, especially the unique look given to each and every piece. There will be no two pieces exactly alike in size, color or finish. Even if the artisan uses the same materials, measurements and paint they will not be the same.

The many different projects that can be made of primitive wood craft are also unique. Small to mid-size benches from picket fence type benches to deacon benches. Each is unique and can be made to fit into practically every decorative scheme, but they especially fit into country.

Making Items with Love and Care

The woodcrafter working in primitive wood craft also likes to know their finished products were made by their own labor of love. Whether the project if for another as a gift, for themselves or to display and sell, the item was made with the artist’s hands and there’s a great amount of pride in that.

Primitive wood craft signs are especially popular and many people will have one for each season. The signs can also convey patriotism and welcome to the home and many even add humor to the landscape.

First, the primitive wood craft is designed and built and the type of wood is not really that important, but many opt to work with oak due to its appearance and durability. Designs and decorations are hand painted then the item is usually sanded to give the appearance of being old. A weather-proof coating may be applied if it is intended for outdoor use.

There many other decorative items made with primitive wood craft including the reindeer made out of a length on landscape timber, holiday trees cut from a 1” x 8” board and one of the most popular is a garden sign declaring it a “Garden of Weedin” adding humor to their environment.

To work with primitive wood craft it takes time, patience, a little know how and a lot of practice to get your items exactly how you want them, but the rewards of doing the entire process yourself can be great.

Wood working designs have been around as long as man has been working with wood and other raw materials. Humans seem to have an innate desire to create things, and many have created beautiful items out of wood. Wood working designs, however have changed through the years as often as the culture and tastes of society have changed. A piece of furniture from the Victorian era would probably not fit in with the harvest gold decorating era of the 1970s.

Some wood working designs have been passed down through the years, and are still used today. Certain types of furniture or other home décor, such as shelves, can often be passed down through the generations and can weather the storm of popular culture and bizarre designs that have occurred in the last 30 years.

Types of Wood Working Designs

Wood working designs can come in so many shapes, patterns, pictures, designs, or just about anything humans can ever dream of. A wood working design can reflect a person’s own thoughts, feelings, and interests or it could be inspired by something they have seen in nature or man made.

Wood working designs can be carried out in several ways. One way is with a scroll saw, which is a very versatile tool when it comes to working with wood. You can use your wood working design and cut out pieces of the wood so that you can look through the piece of wood in the design area.

You can also use a scroll saw for a different type of design. Pieces can be cut out and used together or separately. A good example of this would be a wooden puzzle or a small shelf.

A wood working design can also simply be burned into the wood. Wood burning is another variety of wood working, where a design is literally burnt into the wood with a hot, pointed ‘wand’ that looks a lot like a soldering iron. If done correctly, these designs can be very elegant. However, if not done correctly, they can produce lines that are too heavy or just crude-looking.

If you are at all interested in wood working, eventually you will begin looking at good designs. With the advent of the Internet, free designs are just a click away. Libraries can also be a good source for wood working designs as even if the library doesn’t have the book you want, they can order it for you through inter-library loan and have it to you within a few weeks.

Whatever your skill level in dealing with wood working designs, it can seem like it never will become boring. From simple designs to very complex and intricate once, once you begin working with wood, you will be sharing a common pastime of many others through the centuries.

Wood working can be very fun, especially if you practice it as your hobby, and have a special place in your house; be it your garage, your basement or even your back patio. With the proper skills and the materials, extremely good products can be produced within matter of hours or days. What you need besides this would be a range of appropriate wood working equipment and tools to assist you throughout the whole process.

You can use basic household equipments and tools if you want so choose or if you can not afford the hi-tech equipment. However, the end product of using household tools will not be as good as the special tools because the professional equipment has been specifically designed for these purposes. For example, you can obviously see the difference between using a pen-knife and a carving knife when it comes to carving jobs.

Variety and Price Range

Wood working equipment or tools are obviously more expensive than your household equipment, but it’s worth investing in them. For heavy wood work, you have to have a working table, rather than thinking of using a dinner table or any other table from the house, which might not stand the hammering and sawing pressure jobs.

There are many products which are not so expensive, and can be bought from used or second-hand goods store. These equipments have passed the quality check and usually are maintained as good as new, so usually there is little fear in buying them.

Alternatively, you can go for the lower end of the same range of the products if you really can not afford the more expensive ones, but necessarily need those for your wood work. For example, you can always buy a circular saw instead of an expensive versatile power table saw if you don’t have a specific place or table to do your work.

Or you can go for all-purpose wood working equipment rather than buying one for each purpose, which will consume much of your space as well as money. For example, you can always go for multi-purpose woodwork claw hammers, generally usable for all wood working jobs, rather than buying individual hammers for individual purposes.

In conclusion, you need the right equipment for the right job as the right wood working equipments and tools that can make lots of difference in the quality of the work you produce. Always make sure that you keep abreast with online reviews and journals which would update you on the best range of wood working equipment available.

There are many ways to pass your leisure time pleasantly. Mostly people use it to catch up with their hobbies, traveling or renewing social contacts. Among hobbies, many start as just a way to spend time and turn into a life long passion. One such hobby is wood work.

Five Important Safety Tips

A wise person will extend his pleasure by doing everything the right way. Wood work is indeed a great hobby, but also one where you can get critically injured and even killed if the required safety measures are not followed.

Why take such a risk, when all it requires is about ten minutes of precautionary work each time you start working in your woodshed. Consider yourself a captain ready in the cockpit of a plane and the importance of checking out that everything is in order before the plane takes off.

One, wear appropriate clothes – many people prefer to dress into overalls specifically tailored for wood work, which is a great idea. You should avoid wearing overflowing clothes because these might get caught in any of the power tools causing immense damage.

Two, always wear shoes when in the woodshed. If you prefer to be barefoot while working, just consider the consequence of stamping on a nail or a sharp wood shaving. It is better that you wear closed toe shoes, because even sandals or flip flops leave your feet exposed and susceptible to injury.

Three, get familiarizes with your tools well. Do not plunge into using a new tool – however sophisticated and great the tool may be. Wood work requires a certain amount of expertise and however good a new tool is, unless you are totally comfortable with its use, you may not be able to get your required results.

Just like a camera needs a roll or two of film before you understand how it works; wood work too needs a good understanding of how the tool works before it can be used to give desired results.

Four, never use your power tool if it is wet or in the rain. This could be fatal to you due to electrocution. It is better that you wait for some time until the water dries off before plugging in the tool.

Lastly, but most importantly, discontinue immediately the use of a malfunctioning tool. Never attempt to “manage” with a tool that is malfunctioning. The potential dangers are much too high when compared to the benefits of working with such a tool.
