Are you remodeling your kitchen?  Have you picked out the new cabinets yet? Well, there are plenty of ways that you can use reflect on your personality and find the perfect cabinets for your kitchen. When it comes to remodeling a kitchen, the cabinets can take up about 50% of the budget. You need to be able to define what you are looking for before you go shopping so that you can revamp your kitchen and make it perfect.

You first should go online and define exactly what you are looking for. Do you want dark or light cabinets?  Are you willing to purchase unfinished cabinets?  What type of finish are you looking for?  You need to make sure that if you were going for dramatic, you get deep stains cabinets. If you are going for a country look, oak, and some of the lighter colors are best. Since you have defined, your style and the statement that you want to make you now can move on.

Now consider your space. To you want to limit your cabinets because you want more space, or do you need more cabinets and less space?  You will need to see how many cabinets that you need and what for. You may want to look into some special options like a lazy Suzan or somewhere to hang things instead of hides them. When it comes to space, you need to know your area. You will need to make a plan of where you want everything and how much room you have to do it.

You may even want to get some of the pre-designed kitchens. All you have to do is take the measures to make sure that everything is going to fit and look nice in your kitchen. If your purchase cabinets at package price, instead of individually, you will be able to save some money, however you should develop a budget.

If you are looking at custom cabinets, they will be more expensive than anything else. They are made with detail and craftsmanship, as well as, constructed to fit your every need. You should know that custom build cabinets could take over two months to make and be installed.

No matter what you end up purchasing, just make sure that it is something that you will like and look good in your home.

The basics of remodeling on a budget

The basics of remodeling on a budget aren’t difficult; they’re just not used enough. A little planning can go a long way, while still allowing you to achieve your remodeling goals.

Creating Your Budget

The first step is to research costs by making a list of prices of the products you plan to install and/or purchase.  You can get the sample prices by looking on the Internet, or by contacting:

•  kitchen and bathroom showrooms
•  home improvement retailers
•  appliance stores

If you’re unsure of which products you might ultimately choose, write down the range of prices for those items.

Ask contractors for bids on the project based on your selection of products and finishes. Examine the bids to ensure they include enough details on items that can affect the cost. There should be a list of all the functional components — framing material, drywall, and plumbing and electrical systems, and details on what type of fixtures and appliances will be included.

Remodeling budgets fall into three general categories:

•  mechanical (electrical, plumbing and heating)
•  labor
•  materials

Each category typically accounts for 25 to 35 percent of the total budget. You also should set aside 10 to 20 percent of the total budget to cover unexpected construction costs, price increases for materials and project changes.

Once the bids are in place, then review your financial picture. Look at your finances for the past year to see if you had enough cash flow to meet expenses. If you are considering taking out a loan, can you make the payments without cutting into your routine expenses?

Staying On Your Budget

Once the project begins, keep track of budget changes and decide whether you will increase the total cost of the project or scale back on another area to stay within the budget. Consumers often exceed their budgets because they ask the contractor to add little projects that are outside of the bid estimate. Avoid using the words, “While you are here, you may as well….”

What are other ways to stay within your budget?

•  avoid the temptation to add “small” details to the project
•  do some of the work yourself, if you have the skills
•  divide the project into phases to spread out the cost over six months to a year.
