Choosing a Kitchen Door

Remodeling can be a lot of fun. There are new appliances and furniture choices, paint samples, and plenty of options for new flooring. When you remodel a kitchen, you have to think about the function of the room as well as what you want in the way of décor. If you are putting up new cupboards and doors, you want things that make sense with your lifestyle. You may not think much about your choice in kitchen door, but that is actually one consideration that you should put a lot of thought into before you make your final decision.

Though a full size kitchen door is something you find on most kitchens that are closed off, this is not always the best choice for a kitchen. If you rarely cook and do not spend a lot of time there, the door you walk through to get in and out of your kitchen is not going to be of much consideration. If you live alone, you may not have to give it much thought either. However, for everyone else, the traditional full length, turn-knob, kitchen door may not be the best and most convenient answer.

Instead of that type of kitchen door, think about getting something you can open without using your hands. If you move in and out of your kitchen to a dining room, but you do not have an open space without a door, you want something you can open without your hands. There are swinging doors that stay in place when you are not going through them, but that swing when you put pressure on them with your shoulder or hip. This makes walking in and out of your kitchen with your hands full so much easier.

This type of kitchen door comes in many sizes. You can get what appear to be French style doors that go all the way to the floor but do not have knobs. You can also find doors that are just a few feet high that can be put up shoulder high so that you can easily bump them open. They give the feeling of a kitchen door without completely closing off the space of your kitchen from the rest of your home. There are even more varieties out there if you go to your local home improvement store to look at your options.

If you have a kitchen door, but think perhaps you would rather have an opening between your kitchen and dining room, you can remove the one you have and open the space up a bit. You have to find out if you have any beams in the wall that are load bearing, as you can not move these, but otherwise, you can open the wall up a bit and perhaps have an arch put in where your kitchen door use to be. You may even be able to completely move where your door or open arch would be when you remodel, but again, make sure it is safe to do so before you start cutting into the wall.

Remodeling a Kitchen

There are many reasons why you may want to remodel your kitchen. It could be that the kitchen is a disaster or you may just need to freshen up the place. Even after this, there are other factors to consider in any kitchen remodeling undertaking. Do you want to spend extended periods doing this or having work crews in your house? Do you want to spend money doing this and if so how much? Will the remodeling be surface level renovation or deep-down?

Once you have determined what you want, look up ideas on how to go about it. Since renovation usually starts with a design, consider its convenience, organization and functionality. Kitchen remodeling designs are plenty and the challenge will not be locating one but rather deciding which one among the many you will employ. You will want to select a design that employs the 3 elements in a balanced way. A layout like the drive-through is designed for a dual entrance and exit on opposite ends of your kitchen. If you have a small house with a lot of traffic, this is a great layout to have. Another design is the U-Turn. This layout has an open floor plan that overlooks the living or dining room. This layout provides the most storage, functionality and most cabinets depending on the size of your kitchen. Other designs include the Corner which provides a lot of counter space and storage below, the Arrow and the Corral. Whichever design you choose, there are universal points that apply to all of these designs; triangulation, which provides best functionality by aligning sinks, ranges and refrigeration in a triangular form, provide ample space for countertop areas, keep dishwashers within sink distance, approximately 3 feet, keep kitchen isles to at least 42 inches wide and any cabinet doors installed should not hit when they are opened.

Kitchen remodeling also means that you budget how you will spend on the entire project. Decide in advance how much you want to spend and stick to it. Determine also the cost breakdown. For example how will go into cabinets, floors, fixtures, fittings and other things that need renovation. Kitchen remodeling always has some unexpected surprises, thus ensure that you set aside about 20 percent of the budget to these occurrences. Remember also to prioritize your renovations. What is more important to you? New cabinets or new appliances? Writing down a list of priorities will help. With your idea, priorities and cash at hand, you can now start your kitchen remodeling.
